Savachia yanked Alex behind the heavy curtain, cutting off the solar flare coming from the stage. Pimawa led the way backstage, into a wing and then down a hallway, where they could just make out the faint glow of the Exit sign through the dust-laden air.

“There it is!” said Savachia. “C’mon!”

The kids caught up to Pimawa, already thumping a foot anxiously against the dented metal door. Emma pushed at the crash bar. The door remained closed. Savachia jumped in to help. They battered at the mechanism. It didn’t budge.

At the other end of the hall, six guards charged around the corner, their electric batons at the ready.

Alex looked around for another way out. He searched for a weapon. There had to be something! A sign, any indication of what to do!

The guards slowed down, as if they knew their targets had no way out. The lead soldier scraped her baton along the wall, releasing blue sparks that reflected off her spiked red hair.
